CONTRAPUNTO

My practice explores how fracture, pattern, and growth mirror the fragile architectures of both material and human worlds. Trained in gold and silversmithing, I turn to minerals and gemstones as sites of inquiry, magnifying crystalline interiors to reveal hidden microcosms. Under the jeweller’s loupe, a specimen becomes a landscape of frozen forms, fractures, and coloured zones a reminder that inclusions, often dismissed as flaws, are what create a stone’s unique effects.

Elemento extends this fascination with the overlooked and discarded. In Contrapunto (Spanish for counterpoint), two parallel series — Monocromo and Policroma — explore the interplay of opposites. Monocromo uses macro photography to accentuate the sculptural qualities of raw minerals, while Policroma refracts painted collages through colourless crystals, producing abstract, painterly compositions.

This work sits within a lineage from Renaissance cabinets of curiosity to modernist geometry and contemporary art-science dialogues. In our unsettled present, Elemento suggests that fracture is not failure, but transformation, a space where resilience, memory, and possibility are revealed.
